Natural methods of contraception

The natural method of preventing pregnancy is known as fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs) or natural family planning. FABMs involve tracking your menstrual cycle to determine when you are most likely to be fertile and abstaining from sexual intercourse during that time.

There are several different types of FABMs, but here are the basic steps to follow:

1.Track your menstrual cycle: Keep track of the length of your menstrual cycle by marking the first day of your period on a calendar. Your menstrual cycle is the number of days between the first day of your period and the first day of your next period.

2.Determine your fertile window: Use your menstrual cycle to determine when you are most likely to be fertile. This involves tracking changes in your cervical mucus and taking your basal body temperature each morning.

3.Avoid intercourse during your fertile window: Once you have determined your fertile window, avoid having sex during that time. You can either abstain from sex altogether or use a barrier method of contraception, such as a condom.

For example, if a woman has a 28-day menstrual cycle, her fertile window is typically from day 10 to day 17 of her cycle. During this time, she and her partner can avoid sexual intercourse or use a barrier method of contraception such as a condom to prevent pregnancy.

It's important to note that FABMs are not as effective as other forms of birth control, such as hormonal contraception or intrauterine devices (IUDs). FABMs require a high level of commitment and consistency, and even then, there is still a risk of unintended pregnancy.

If you are considering using FABMs as a method of contraception, it's important to speak with a healthcare provider who can help you determine if it's a good option for you and provide guidance on how to effectively use the method.
